Want to create a custom diamond painting kit from a photo, but not sure which options to choose ? Here are our tips:
- How to choose the right size of work?
- Should I crop the photo or resize it?
- Should I use square beads or round beads?
- Should I touch up? the photo or apply a filter to it?
(You can also send us your photo and ask for our opinion .)
Choosing the right conversion size
When converting a photo to diamond painting , the number of pixels and colors of the original image are greatly reduced :
- A square rhinestone measuring 2.5 mm on each side can be placed 4 per cm. A transformation into 40 x 60 cm will therefore represent 160 x 240 points, whereas a small digital photo will be 1600 x 2400 pixels, or 100 times more!
(A round rhinestone is 2.8 mm in diameter.) - The diamond painting color chart has a maximum of 447 colors, while a "normal" photo has hundreds of thousands of colors...
To avoid too much alteration of the original image, sometimes with strange gradients (flat tints), opt for the largest possible kit size , while respecting your budget.
Here's a simple rule, based on the number of subjects (people, animals, etc.) in the photo:
- 1 subject = 30 x 40 cm minimum
- 2 subjects = 40 x 50 cm minimum
- 3 subjects = 60 x 80 cm minimum
Crop the photo if necessary
What to do if even a large format does not allow you to obtain sufficiently precise details? Reduce the area to be converted! By refocusing the image on the main subjects, you will potentially have 3 positive effects:
- reduce “pixelation” (blurring effect),
- limit the size of “useless” areas (for example, 30 cm2 of empty sky or white wall...),
- increase the overall quality of the work by focusing on topics of interest!
Choosing round or square rhinestones to stick on?
Opinions differ on the question of round beads ( 2.8 mm in diameter ) or square beads (2.5 mm on each side)... Some fans say that the round one is prettier but a little more complicated to make , others say exactly the opposite! :D
In practice, it is easier to pick up square rhinestones with tweezers because of their straight side, but more difficult to place them on the canvas because you have to respect their alignment. By definition, since rounds have no angles, you can place them without worrying about the edges being straight. ;)
In terms of the final rendering, the squares take up all the space on the canvas, while the circles leave a bit of "emptiness". Finally, the number of facets is not the same on the two shapes, and the circles are very slightly larger.
We can also say that, not having a space between each cabochon, the squares have a slightly more "photographic", more realistic rendering, like the pixels of a photo. Suddenly, the circles have a slightly more "fantasy", more artistic rendering.
Our recommendation: try both and make up your own mind!
Option: enhance the photo with a touch-up or effect
Is your original photo damaged, dull, poorly framed, has an ugly background or an element that needs to be erased? Would you like to embellish it or give it an artistic effect , for example sepia, a sketch or impressionist look, etc.?
Give it to us and we will touch it up before generating your conversion project, "customized diamond painting"! ;)
